As our region braces for the impact of the federal shutdown on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, our store is launching community-supported initiatives this holiday season to help mitigate food insecurity across Plumas County.
Supporting The Community During the SNAP Shutdown
In response to this growing challenge, the co-op is introducing several ways for community members to come together and help those most affected:
Food Donation Bins
Both of our store locations (Quincy and Portola) now feature donation bins at the front entrance where customers can contribute non-perishable food items. All donations will go directly to local food banks serving families in need. Please donate only items that are nonperishable and within their expiration date.
The Giving Tree
From November 1 through December 31, shoppers can help provide direct financial support by purchasing a “leaf” for our Giving Tree in the amounts of $1, $5, $10, $20, or $50. All funds collected will be distributed to assist community members in need at the end of November and December.
Round Up at the Register
December Round Up contributions at our Portola location will be used to purchase fresh produce boxes for local households experiencing hardship.
The Impact of SNAP at The Co-op
SNAP benefits play a crucial role in the food economy of Plumas County. In 2024, SNAP users spent $123,537.42 at our co-op — approximately 2.6% of total sales. So far this year, SNAP purchases have totaled $134,918.57, representing 3.4% of our total sales across 5,785 transactions.
“These numbers show just how important SNAP benefits are to many of our neighbors — and why community support matters now more than ever,” said Marcie Wilde, our co-op’s General Manager.
Local Food Banks and Resources
Our food bank partners have shared a list of community resources for those seeking assistance. Donations received through our programs will be distributed among these local organizations:
EPCAN (Eastern Plumas Community Action Network) – 120 Nevada St. Portola, CA
Plumas Crisis Intervention Center – 591 Main St. Quincy, CA (530) 283-5515
Portola Crisis Intervention Center – 165 Ridge St. Portola, CA (530) 240-0697
CAN (Community Action Network) – 176 Lawrence St. (Catholic Church) Quincy, CA (530)283-0262
Together, We Can Make a Difference
We invite everyone in the community to participate in our donation programs this season — whether through food donations, Giving Tree contributions, or spreading awareness. Our goal is to raise $3,000 with our Giving Tree and Round Up programs by year-end. Help us make that happen!
