November 2021

Message from the Board

By Gia Martynn, Board President

Member-owners and all FRFC customers, just a little note from your FRFC Board of Directors to update everyone on what we’ve been up to.  October was Community Appreciation Days (CAD) and we hope you all had a chance to chat with a Board member, give us your feedback on our bakery/deli survey, grab some free samples, and enter our raffles.  If you didn’t get a chance to stop by and take the bakery/deli survey, you can still give your input by taking the survey online at www.qnf.coop through November 30th. In June, we lost Board Director Amy Napoleon and recently filled her seat in September with member-owner Melissa Lopez from Taylorsville. We’re excited to welcome Melissa to the Board.  If you happen to see her in the Co-op or around town be sure to give her a shout out.

Every other year in November the Board holds a “Breakfast with the Board” event for member owners to engage with the Board on a particular topic.  Our last Breakfast with the Board was in 2019 where we talked about our five-year strategic plan.  This year, due to COVID and the inability to have such an event outdoors, we have cancelled Breakfast with the Board.  We are very saddened to have to cancel yet another Co-op event, but are hopeful we can resume in person events next year.

The Board continues to work on transitioning our board management to a Policy Governance structure.  Most Co-ops throughout the U.S. use this governance structure, which is “a fundamental redesign of the role of the board, emphasizing values, vision and the empowerment of both board and staff”.  We are working with a Co-op consultant through Columinate to assist us in this transition.  Our Policy Committee has been tasked to take the lead on this effort, and any member who is interested in learning about Policy Governance and/or would like to participate in the process is welcome to join the Policy Committee and/or attend their meetings.  If interested, please contact me via the Board email listed on the Co-op website at board@featherriver.coop.  More information regarding Policy Governance can be found on the Columinate website at https://columinate.coop/library/.

Lastly, just a reminder that our monthly board meetings are the third Thursday of every month (we do not meet in December).  All members are welcome to join our meetings in person or virtually via Zoom.  To attend virtually you can register for the meeting link on the Co-op website at http://qnf.weebly.com/meeting-information.html.  Also, we will be beginning the process of recruiting new candidates for the upcoming elections in 2022.  There will be three seats open for election, so please consider running and being a representative for your Co-op membership.  Watch for more on self-nominating candidacy and the upcoming election to come!

In the meantime, enjoy this beautiful Fall season.  The Board thanks all of you and the FRFC staff for your continued support of our amazing community-owned Co-op.

Sincerely,
Gia Martynn
Your FRFC Board President
